Robert Sohor Obituary

Robert “Bob” Sohor, 82, passed away peacefully on June 22, 2023, in Bridgewater, New Jersey. Bob was born on February 6, 1941, in Brooklyn, New York to the late Paul H. Sohor and Hattie Lubitz. He is predeceased by his loving wife, Patricia Sohor, who died in 1990, and his cats, who he cared for and loved deeply.

Bob was an extraordinarily intelligent and intellectual man, who graduated with a degree in pharmacy from Columbia University in 1964. He was an avid reader who spent his time outside of work as a pharmacist reading books about physics, astronomy and organic chemistry. For fun, he liked to mix it up with science fiction and mystery novels. Bob was the epitome of an individual who knew something about anything and everything – he was truly committed to the art of learning.

Bob had a wide-range of interests, which he loved sharing with his family: his friend-turned-brother, Naeem Mian, Naeem’s wife, Shaista Mian, who became his sister, and his nieces and nephew, Juhee, Haroon, Zahra & Seema Mian. Bob was a devoted uncle, who visited his nieces and nephew on a weekly basis, where he would share his wisdom, and some jokes, over a home-cooked meal. He was fond of Pakistani food and would eagerly await to see what meal Shaista had prepared each week. He loved spices and could go toe-to-toe with Naeem, a native of Pakistan, in competitions of who could eat more chili peppers. Bob was a sharp dresser, who would arrive at the Mian residence for dinner before work in a 3-piece suit every week, which his nieces and nephew were in awe of.

Bob was highly involved in his nieces and nephew’s lives and made it his mission to ensure that they grew up to be cultured, well-rounded individuals. Whether it was teaching them how to play chess, which he was a master at, taking them into New York City to attend operas, going to the aquarium, sharing his favorite classical music with them, or exposing them to the world of Star Trek, Bob was always there to enrich their minds and warm their souls. When his niece took a sudden liking to rollerblading, he bought his first pair of rollerblades in his 50s and decided he would give it a try too.

Bob made sure each of his nieces and nephew felt special. He enjoyed taking them for one-on-one outings on their birthdays to Toys-R-Us or the mall, where they would get to pick out their birthday gift personally. If they ever struggled with subjects in school, Bob would carve out time to provide tutoring, love and encouragement. He never missed a birthday or graduation. He displayed pictures and mementos of his nieces and nephew in his home proudly and when they got older and were in college, he would mention the peculiar feeling of empty-nest syndrome.

Bob may not have been related to his nieces and nephew by blood, but he did not have to be. As they say, “the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb.” Anyone who knew Bob knew he was a good man, with a pure heart. He had so much to offer, and the world is a better place because of him. Naeem, Shaista, Juhee, Haroon, Zahra and Seema Mian, along with his grand-nieces, Inayah Mian Sugar and Sabeen Hana Mian, will cherish his memory for all time.
