Mercedes Fernandez

Mercedes Fernandez, 93, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 29, 2019 at Abingdon Care & Rehabilitation Center in Green Brook, NJ. Born in Havana, Cuba on March 9, 1926. Her parents were from the regions of La Coruna and Lugos of Spain. On December 24, 1968 her and her daughter, Mercedes left everything in Cuba and moved to the United States. They spent 3 years with family in Los Angeles, California before settling in Newark, NJ where she worked for First Fidelity Bank as an administrative assistant.  

"Abuela" as many knew her was a strong willed, loving and caring woman. She was known not to take any nonsense from anyone, but at the same time would be welcoming enough to make you a cafecito. She never had a license to drive, but could always be seen walking around Newark with her famous fiery red hair. Abuela had a huge love for the New York Yankees. You could always catch her in her room watching the game then being able to give you a play by play and results of each player’s performance, to which she would swear at them in Spanish when they underperformed. She cherished her time spent with her Grandsons and loved being a "Bisa". She lived a very long and loving happy life. She will be incredibly missed.  

She is survived by her daughter, Mercedes Alfonso of Mt. Arlington, NJ; Grandson, Alejandro "Alex" Alfonso and wife, Kristi of Cherry Hill, NJ; Grandson, Andres Alfonso of Mt. Arlington, NJ; and Great Grandchildren, Alexa and Alexander Alfonso.
  
Family and Friends are invited to attend a celebration of life gathering on Saturday, October 5th at 3 pm at Seasons Glen Community Center, 1 Community Lane, Mt Arlington, NJ. Casual Dress attire is encouraged.
