Lois Gorgine Monahan passed away on March 2, 2020 after almost 97 years of an extraordinary life. She was born and raised in Orrville, Ohio. Lois married the love of her life, John Walter Monahan. They made their home in Bridgewater, NJ and celebrated 62 years together. Lois and John raised two sons, John Jr. of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa and James (Jimmy) of Clinton, NJ.
Lois was fierce in providing Jimmy who is profoundly autistic a loving and protected life. She advocated for him from the time she learned that his needs were great and the world had yet to understand his condition. Lois lovingly cared for Jimmy until she could no longer do so. Every Sunday she made her way to Hunterdon Developmental Center providing Jimmy with love and an assortment of his favorite treats. Her devotion was as steady as the ground she stood on.
Lois was a volunteer and then a staff employee at Somerset Medical Center for many years. In her spare time, she was an avid reader and loved her daily crossword puzzles.
Lois will best be remembered for her loving tenacity, her quick wit, and her resolve to lead an independent life to the very end.
Lois is predeceased by her parents, Vesta and Earle Oscar Kaufman, her sister, Betty Pauline, and her husband, John Monahan. She is survived by her sons, John and Jimmy and cherished friend, Sara DiGrazia who was the daughter she never had. Private services were held by Bridgewaer Funeral Home, 707 E. Main St., Bridgewater, NJ 08807.
