Kirklyn “Kirk” Richard Slater, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2024, at the age of 71, surrounded by his loved ones.
Born on May 10, 1953, in Liberty, NY, to Richard and Dolores (Sienko) Slater, Kirk spent much of his early childhood in upstate New York before moving to Louisiana, and later to Bound Brook, NJ, where he resided for the remainder of his life. After graduating from Raritan Valley Community College, Kirk embarked on a successful career in sales, which culminated in his retirement in 2022, as Vice President of Sales at Kurt Weiss Greenhouses.
Kirk was married to Lisa (Squier) Slater, for over 45 years. Together, they raised three children —Dana, Allison, and Mariel— whom he loved deeply and who were his greatest pride. Kirk was a hands-on and engaged father, always present at school events, sports practices, and extracurricular activities. Whether helping with homework, offering advice, or just spending time together, Kirk’s love and support were constant. He imparted countless life lessons to his children, always emphasizing hard work, perseverance, and kindness. As a proud father, Kirk reveled in the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren, sharing stories of their successes - especially with his friends at QuickChek, where they gathered most mornings.
Kirk was a dedicated advocate for his community, serving on the town council and passionately supporting local athletics. His enthusiasm was evident at every high school game he attended and he proudly coached his grandson’s soccer team. A lifelong sports lover, Kirk was an accomplished athlete in his youth, excelling in football. Even into his 60s, he played competitive softball and enjoyed golfing with friends, especially cherishing rounds with his son-in-law.
Kirk's warmth, humor, and wisdom made a lasting impression on everyone he met. His colorful stories and jokes brought joy to those around him. His strong presence and unwavering loyalty as a friend and family member will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
He is survived by his loving wife, Lisa Slater; children, Dana Slater (David Gross), Allison Whalen (Mark Whalen), and Mariel Slater (Blake Berger); and his seven beloved grandchildren, Sophia, Benjamin, Natalie, Everett, Reid, Lydia, and Nora. He is also survived by his sisters, Kim Griffin (Tom Griffin) and Karen Kemp, and five cherished nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Slater and Dolores Sienko Slater.
Honoring his wishes, there will be no formal services. In lieu of flowers, you may consider a donation to a charity of your choice.
