John A. Sylvester, 71 died peacefully on Tuesday, September 16, 2025. Beloved son of the late Francis A. and Sophie Sylvester. He was raised in South Bound Brook, where he lived for most of his life. A proud graduate of Bound Brook High School, Class of 1973, Johnny was a standout athlete with exceptional talent in both football and baseball.
His athletic achievements earned him a scholarship to the University of Tampa, where he continued to excel. Johnny was honored as All-County, All-State, and All-Mountain Valley, and he was featured in Parade All-American Magazine. He was also selected for the prestigious NY-NJ All-Star Team.
In 1976, Johnny was drafted by the San Francisco Giants and played in their minor league system for three years until an arm injury curtailed his promising career. He gave baseball one last try, playing for a team in Puerto Rico for a year before officially retiring from the sport.
Johnny then embarked on a 30-year career with the Laborers Local 156, where he was known for his dedication and hard work. After retiring, he finally had the time to relax and enjoy life.
He is survived by his loving sister, Sandra M. Dolan, and her husband, Dennis Kedersha, of Basking Ridge; his brother, Frankie Sylvester, of South Bound Brook; his nephew, Brian F. Dolan, and wife, Amelia, of Somerset; and his cherished great-niece, Sophie.
A memorial visitation will be held on Friday, September 26, 2025, from 9:00–11:00 AM, followed by a service at 11:00 AM at Bridgewater Funeral Home, 707 E. Main Street, Bridgewater, NJ 08807.
