John Foley Obituary

JOHN WILLIAM FOLEY

July 7, 1967 ~ May 26, 2020

John Foley, 52, passed away on Tuesday, May 26th, 2020 in New York City.

John was born on July 7, 1967 in Plainfield, NJ to James and Barbara Foley, the 4th of their seven children. The family resided in Bridgewater, NJ and he was a graduate of BRHS-East High School. Following graduation, John joined the United States Marine Corps and became a weapons specialist. He was honorably discharged after being injured in a mission-related accident in March 1988.

After the USMC, he moved to Burlington, Vermont where he would spend the next 17 years. He worked in construction, carpentry, and restaurant management. He enjoyed kayaking and duck hunting, occasionally at the same time, and loved spending time with several dogs who went through his life. He was able to indulge his outdoorsy, “wild man”-side while living on an island in Lake Champlain for a summer.

In 2007, he moved to Lake Norman, NC and continued working construction and landscaping. He also looked up a former classmate that February, found her in New York City working as a production manager, and eventually married her. On September 6th, 2008, John and Marcia Hahn were married at Lake Lure, NC. Following another wedding on October 4th in New York City, they settled into a life of splitting their time between their house in NC and an apartment in NYC. John loved NYC life and his pool in NC. The house came with several barn cats and John took great care of them, eventually finding homes for no fewer than 23 kittens over the years. He kept 3 kittens who were abandoned, and they became the family pets. One stubborn barn cat adopted John and would be at his side wherever he was.

John was a unique, adventurous man (hence his love of Discovery Channel). You never knew what he might do, he wrote his own script. He was strong and brave and yet was also gentle and kind in so many ways. He looked out for people and was quick to lend a helping hand. He made strangers into friends instantly with his curious nature and genuine soul.

He is survived by his wife, Marcia (nee Hahn). He leaves behind his siblings Bernadette (Jeff) Hunt, Jim (Elizabeth), Kevin, Dennis (Karena), and Maureen (John) Iuzzolino and 12 nieces and nephews; his parents-in-law, Rex and Jane Hahn; and many good friends. He was pre-deceased by his father, James; his mother, Barbara; and most recently, his little brother Timothy.

There are no services planned at this time due to COVID-19. The family will hold a virtual private burial with a Celebration of Life at a later date for both John and Timmy.
