Joan P. Mathis (Ruscetta) 89, passed away peacefully (Friday January 12, 2024) at her home in Somerville.
Daughter of the late Mary Curcio,she grew up in New Brunswick, then moved to Bound Brook to raise her five children. Then later moved to Somerville in 1977 where she lived most of her life. Joan worked as a crossing guard in the 1970's for Bound Brook High School. She then worked as a line worker for Bristol Meyer Squibb, in New Brunswick, until her retirement in 1987. And lastly, she worked for Walmart, as a greeter, until her retirement in 2006.
She enjoyed traveling, shopping, the beach, picnics at her house and holidays with her kids and grandchildren. She also loved anything that sparkled. Her nickname was “Diamond Lil”. Joan enjoyed shopping and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Carmen Ruscetta, then was predeceased by her second husband, Michael Mathis, in 2001.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her beloved daughters; Sandra Benko of Manville, Sharon Hogrebe of Hunterdon County, Debra Ruscetta of Manville, Diane Ruscetta of Bridgewater, Patricia Prugh (Douglas) of Hillsborough; step-son, Dale Mathis; 10 grandchildren, Jacqueline Lopez, Danielle Miranda, Georgie Benko, Scott Hogrebe, David Hogrebe, Robert Gawel, Heather Kuinlan, Tony Sacca, Allison Prugh, and Ashley Prugh; and 13 great-grand children, Anthony, Lorelai, Ellie, Jozlyn, Kayden, Brooke-Lynn, Layla, Lennox, Aubree, Allison, Justyn, Kaleb, and Kinsley.
Her last famous last words “Whatever”!
A memorial visitation will be held from 4-6PM with a service beginning at 5:30PM on Wednesday, January 24, 2024 at the Ketusky Funeral Home, 1310 Brooks Blvd, Manville, NJ 08835. Arrangements by Bridgewater Funeral Home.
