James "Jim" Benning, 89, of South Plainfield, NJ, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Jim was born in Plainfield, NJ, and raised in Dunellen, NJ before settling in South Plainfield in 1960. A proud U.S. Navy veteran, he honorably served his country during the Korean War.
Following his military service, Jim worked for many years as a skilled auto mechanic, machinist at Burroughs Corporation and also at Johnson & Johnson/Ethicon in Bridgewater, NJ, retiring in 1997. Known for his strong work ethic and friendly nature, he left a lasting impression on his coworkers and community alike.
An avid bowler, Jim found joy and camaraderie at the lanes, where he eventually met his wife, Barbara. The two shared a beautiful marriage of over 45 years. Together, they embraced a passion for the outdoors—camping, fishing, and hunting were among Jim’s favorite pastimes. He and Barbara also enjoyed traveling the country on their Harley-Davidson motorcycle, attending rallies and creating lasting memories. They also enjoyed attending Jim’s Navy Reunions from 1998 to 2022 joining other sailors who served on the USS Oak Hill LSD-7.
