Gerald "Ken" Bernhard Obituary

Gerald Kenneth Bernhard, known affectionately as Ken, 86, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2024, after bravely battling cancer. Ken was born on December 12, 1937, to August and Dorothy (Huck) Bernhard.Though his early years were marked by loss with the passing of his father, Ken found strength and guidance in his step-father, Clifford Sheckler. Ken served in the U.S. Army, rose through the ranks to become a Supply Sergeant at Fort Bragg and later had a distinguished career with RCA and Atrion.

Beyond his professional life, Ken was deeply committed to his community, serving as an elder at Pluckemin Presbyterian Church and Vice President of West Point Island Civic Association. Ken's life was marked by a profound love for art. He found solace and inspiration painting with oil and watercolors, particularly capturing the timeless beauty of sailing ships and wooden A cat boats. His legacy continues as his paintings are displayed in numerous locations across Ocean County. In addition to his artistic pursuits, Ken shared a deep passion for classic cars. He cherished his 1951 and 1953 Ford automobiles, and was a proud member of various automobile clubs.

Ken's life was enriched by the love and companionship of his long-time partner, Janet Townsend, whom he met in 2011. Janet stood by his side through life's joys and challenges. Ken was a devoted father to his two sons, Todd Bernhard, and Kurt Bernhard and wife Darlene. His pride and joy extended to his cherished grandchildren, Hannah, Cailey, and Kyle Bernhard, who brought immense happiness and light into his life. In addition, Ken is also survived by his wife, Beverly Bernhard, whom he separated with in 2007. Prior to their separation, they shared a journey filled with cherished memories and shared experiences.
