Edward W. Gorney, ESQ. Obituary

Edward W. Gorney, 88, died peacefully on Sunday, January 25th, 2026. Son of the late Benjamin Gorney and Josphine Uscinowicz, Edward was born and proud of being raised in Jersey City, NJ. It was there that he met his beloved wife of 64 years, Elizabeth "Barbara" Gorney. Edward, or Edge as he was known by his friends, attended St. Peters College and graduated in 1960. He then attended Fordham University Law School at Lincoln Center and legend has it that he accumulated more parking tickets than the NYPD knew how to enforce. After he graduated from Fordham Law, he established law practices in NJ. Ed and Barbara moved to Bridgewater where they've been ever since. Together they raised twin girls, Kathleen Tartaglia (Michael) and Barbara G. Kolecki. Edge was more like a boy scout troop leader, and insisted his girls master practical life skills like changing a tire in the dark, standing up for your beliefs and how to pay your own tuition bill at the registrar’s office. As a grandpa, or 'Gpa', he continued this tradition by teaching Arianna (Ryan Black) how to crack an egg, Alexis how to properly staple paper, and Ryan how to make the perfect blueberry pie.

If there was anything Edge loved more than his family, it was having his family join him for dinner. Ed loved food of all kinds, especially Mike's fresh caught fish and his own special homemade blueberry pie. Edge never lost his love of competition whether it was on a tennis or basketball court, a road bike or Uno on Christmas Day. Eventually, he resorted to enthusiastically watching broadcasts of the sports he loved like every Tennis Grand Slam, March Madness or the Tour de France to keep in touch with the sports he loved so much. In retirement, Ed & Barbara discovered a love for cruises to exotic destinations like Turkey, Australia, Croatia and New Zealand.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, in his memory. Visiting hours will be held from 4-7PM on Tuesday, February 3rd at the Bridgewater Funeral home, 707 East Main Street, Bridgewater, NJ 08807. On Wednesday, February 4th at 10am there will be a funeral mass at Blessed Sacrament Church in Martinsville.
