Dr. Renzhe Jin, age 63, passed away in his home in Bridgewater, NJ on September 3, 2023. He was born in Yanji, China to his late father Changchun Jin (金长春) and late mother Lianyu Zhang (张莲玉). He was the eldest son in a family with four children.
His intelligence, determination, and passion propelled him through a competitive academic landscape in China. In 1982, he graduated from the University of Science and Technology of China with a major in analytical chemistry. In 1984, he obtained his master’s degree in organic chemistry at the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, China Academy of Sciences. While in Shanghai in 1982, he met his wife Yumei Quan. In 1985, he was awarded a doctoral fellowship by Rutgers University and in 1989 he received his PhD in biophysical chemistry. Afterwards he continued as a research associate at Rutgers until 1993. During this time, he published a first-author paper titled “Tetraplex Formation of a Guanine-Containing Nonameric DNA Fragment” in the prestigious scientific journal “Science.”
In 1993, Renzhe started his career as a scientist at Johnson & Johnson, where he would work until his passing. During his 30-year tenure, he held various positions in Analytical and Formulation Development. He made key contributions to the development and commercialization of multiple landmark pharmaceutical products. Through his work, he patented an aqueous sustained-release formulation for proteins. He was well known for his passion for science and novel solutions to unique problems. Beyond his professional accomplishments, Renzhe is remembered by his colleagues for his kindness and compassion.
Renzhe had many hobbies and interests. He enjoyed athletic activities and was an avid ping pong player, golfer, and runner. He maintained an organic fruit and vegetable garden with his wife. In his free time, he also enjoyed researching futures and foreign exchange trading. He enjoyed watching soccer matches and playing games with family and friends. He was a devoted and loving husband and father.
Renzhe is survived by his wife, Yumei, and their two sons, Peter and Evan. He is also survived by his older sister Meizi Jin, younger brother Guangzhe Jin, younger sister Jingzi Jin, several nieces and nephews, and many friends.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 8, 2023 from 11:30AM - 1PM at the Bridgewater Funeral Home, 707 East Main Street, Bridgewater, NJ 08807. Burial will follow 2PM, at Lake Nelson Memorial Park in Piscataway.
