Doris R. Gordon passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 12th at her home in Bridgewater. She will be dearly missed by her husband James Gordon of nearly 70 years. One of eight children born to her parents in Kittanning, PA, where she lived until she joined the Navy following her graduation from high school. She became a member of the Military Air Transport Service and served as a flight attendant during her time of service, allowing her to travel to many European and Middle Eastern countries. While stationed at Westover Air Force Base in 1954 in Holy Oak, Massachusetts she met her future husband.
They were married in Chicago, Illinois in May of 1955. They took up residence in South Holland, Illinois where their four children, Jeff, Wade, Beth, and Gary were born. There they made many friends and later returned several times to visit. In 1966 a new job required relocating to Tulsa, Oklahoma. Doris loved Tulsa and the new beautiful home where they settled and made many friends. Doris’s love for decorating and gardening took root there and she directed her husband to build two raised rose beds surrounded by brick walls. Her gardens were quite beautiful.
In 1972, Jim was offered a new position which required relocating to New Jersey. Doris was quite disappointed with the home she moved into in Bridgewater; being an avid and accomplished baker she was initially quite frustrated by the size, and cabinet layout of the kitchen. She began to remodel the house, mostly on her own as James was travelling on business nearly every week. It took many years for her to finally get the home into something she was happy with. As time moved on she and James were able to travel to many places in the US and overseas, sometimes hosting trips for the business relationships that James had developed.
Doris had been unwell for the past few years. Fortunately she had a wonderful live-in nurse who was devoted to keeping Doris comfortable and happy, often taking the time necessary to do her nails and style her hair which she loved. It was difficult to witness Doris as she fought a good long hard fight. She is survived by her husband James, her four children, Jeff, Wade, Beth, and Gary, one granddaughter, Ali, three grandsons, Trent, Chase, and CJ, a great grandson, Miles, and a great granddaughter, Grace, a brother, Jim Cogley, and a sister, Mary Hutchinson, all of whom will deeply miss her love and her fantastic cooking.
Memorial visitation will be held from 2-4PM, on Monday, March 17, 2025 with a memorial service at 3:30PM.
Cremation was held privately by Bridgewater Funeral Home, 707 E. Main St., Bridgewater, NJ 08807.
