Cheryl Wiegand-Langley Obituary

Cheryl A. Wiegand-Langley (Sherry) passed away unexpectedly but peacefully at home on February 11, 2024, with her husband Peter by her side. Sherry was a powerful presence with an opinionated sense of being. She loved offering her poignant and direct advice, always shocking those around her with her off-the-cuff fire and witticism.

Sherry was born to Adelaide (Taboreck) and Charles Wiegand and raised on Staten Island. She was a curious child and an inquisitive student, carrying her passion for education and learning with her for the duration of her life. She was never afraid to ask questions, to satisfy her need to understand the world and the people around her.

When Sherry and Peter had Jonathan, Sherry was the best stay at home mom imaginable, making sure that Jonathan was always cared for and the two shared a special bond as a result. She volunteered at Jonathan’s schools as a class mom and was always a formidable presence when it came to Jonathan’s upbringing.  As Jonathan got older, Sherry began volunteering as a patient representative at JFK Medical Center in Edison, and then substituting in the Piscataway Township School District. Later, she accepted a full-time position working as an Instructional Aide with special needs children. She retired in 2009.

Sherry had a voracious passion for reading and enjoyed her Kindle right up until the very end. She loved listening to Luciano Pavarotti, cooking, drinking Budweiser out of a wine glass, and Barefoot Pinot Grigio (with a lot of ice, of course). Some of the places she loved and had the fondest memories of were Beach Haven, NJ and Woodstock, VT.

Sherry is survived by her husband Peter of 47 years, her beloved son Jonathan and daughter-in-law Jonya, her two prized and beyond treasured grandchildren Jake and Grace, as well as a cherished nephew Kevin (Daniela), her sister Valerie Schiavone, her brother Charles (Skip) Wiegand, and her dearest and longest childhood friends Susan Ellis and Tommy Vernazza. Sherry is also survived by nieces, great-nieces, and great-great nieces and nephews, including all of those in her vast extended family who knew her most affectionately as “Aunt Gram.”

The very day before her death, Jake and Grace went for a quick visit with Jonathan, and Sherry gave them two HUGE boxes of Junior Mints (a box each), a treat that the three shared a common love of. In return, she received two tight and loving hugs, ones that her grandchildren will always remember. The last memory of their beloved Gram was them yelling “I love you!” out of the car window, a beep, and a lot of waves goodbye.

Hours before she died, Sherry and Jonathan spoke on the phone for the last time as part of their daily check in. Jonathan will always carry with him the last words they exchanged with each other, “Ok goodbye I love you, “ and “I love you too, bye.”

The world will not be the same without Sherry, but she lives on in the memory of those that loved and cared about her.

Visiting hours will be held from 3-7PM on Friday, February 16, 2024 at the Bridgewater Funeral Home, 707 E. Main Street, Bridgewater, NJ 08807. A funeral service will beheld at 6PM during the visitation.
