Bernard Horst Walter passionately known as Bernie was born on December 13, 1959 in Irvington, NJ to Karen Christa Strenge and Horst Walther. He has one sister, Lisa Walther and one brother, Ronald Walther. He has 2 stepparents Heidi and Alan Johnson. Bernie's biological parents are deceased, and he has reunited with his parents and his longtime friend, Glenn Hicks.
At the age of 19 Bernie moved into Woodbine Developmental Center where he lived from June 12, 1978 through August 17, 1981. He moved to North Jersey Developmental Center from June 1985 and then to New Lisbon Developmental Center until October 2005. Bernard also stayed with Zinc Inc. until May 2006 when he returned to New Lisbon Developmental Center.
On January 2015 Bernie moved to a residential group home with Everas Community Services in Morganville. He had 3 housemates but more like brothers. Bernie also attended Our-Co Industries Freehold Day Program in Freehold, NJ.
Bernie moved from labor to reward on July 27th, 2020 at home surround by his roommates and his dedicated and supportive staff. He will be deeply missed by his Everas’s Family. We all will remember Bernie with him holding plastic in his hands.
Visiting hours will be held from 12:30PM to 1:30PM, Thursday, July 30, 2020 at the Bridgewater Funeral Home, 707 E. Main St., Bridgewater, NJ with funeral services at 1:00PM at the funeral home. Bernie’s final resting place will at Franklin Memorial Park Cemetery 1800 NJ-27 North Brunswick Township, NJ 08902.
