Avis Cole Hornsby, 98, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 15, 2026, at Hunterdon Care Center in Flemington, New Jersey.
Born in Montreal, Canada, to the late Eric and Olive Cole, Avis was formerly a resident of Edison and Barnegat, New Jersey, before moving to Hunterdon County.
Avis began her career as a flight attendant with American Airlines, where she worked until 1963. She then devoted herself to raising her family before returning to the workforce as a Parts Coordinator for NAPA Auto Parts in South Plainfield, New Jersey. She retired in 1991.
Avis enjoyed a full and active life. She loved traveling, spending time with her family—especially her grandchildren—and cherished days at the beach and by the pool. She also enjoyed taking long walks and relaxing with her favorite cup of hot tea. In addition, Avis generously volunteered her time at the Holy Thrift Store in Waretown, New Jersey. Her warmth, kindness, and love for her family will be remembered by all who knew her.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Joseph E. Hornsby, who passed away in 2000; her sister, Joyce McClintock; and her brother-in-law, Lloyd McClintock.
Avis leaves behind to cherish her memory her sons, Doug Hornsby and his wife, Laurie, and Gregg Hornsby and his wife, Eva; as well as her cherished grandchildren, Joseph and Katelin.
Cremation services were held privately under the direction of Bridgewater Funeral Home, 707 East Main Street, Bridgewater, New Jersey.
