Sofia Marko Carpluk passed away in her sleep on Sunday, March 10, 2024 at 90 years old.
Sofia was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Peter Carpluk Sr., and by her grandson, Theodore Peter Carpluk IV. She is survived by her sons Theodore Peter Carpluk III, Robert Carpluk and his wife Karen Ann Carpluk, and Andrew Carpluk, as well as her granddaughter and her husband, Kimberly and Nicholas Farina.
Sofia was born on December 13th, 1933, in New York City to Ukrainian parents. Sofia always carried her Ukrainian heritage close to her heart, and she shared her love of tradition with those around her. She performed with New Dance Ukraine at the 1964 World's Fair. She served as a delegate for the Ukrainian National Convention. She created beautiful pysanky, Ukrainian Easter eggs — a skill she taught to her granddaughter Kimberly. She hosted Ukrainian Easter brunch (with blessed Easter baskets) and Ukrainian Christmas Eve Dinner (with the best borscht and vushkas around) for family and friends. Sofia was a skilled pierogi maker and made mountains of pierogis for her family and for the church. She was a member of the Holy Cross Ukrainian Church choir, for which she sang Soprano, and she would go Christmas caroling during the holiday season. Sofia passed her love of Ukraine and her heritage down to her sons and grandchildren, through Ukrainian dancing, food, and the many traditions she shared and new ones she created.
Sofia was a New Yorker through and through, growing up on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and living in the Bronx, Forest Hills, and Astoria, Queens throughout her lifetime. Sofia graduated from Queens College with a degree in Speech Therapy and took additional courses in education, eventually receiving her Masters in Art. Sofia taught elementary school in the South Bronx and later taught Art in Queens, New York.
Sofia had a passion for all things artistic and creative. She loved to garden in her backyard, cultivating a lush landscape full of thriving plants and flowers. She was a brilliant seamstress and sewed Halloween and theatre costumes for her granddaughter. She loved visiting museums and working on craft projects. She thoroughly enjoyed singing and going to the theatre. Sofia also loved to travel around the globe, often bringing her family along on cruises. Sofia loved to learn and to share her knowledge — she was a trivia champ! Sofia’s passion for the arts and knowledge touched so many in her life, and her passion lives on through those she’s taught and inspired.
Sofia was deeply loved and will be immeasurably missed.
